Leksandsbröd is a family business with a 200-year history where sustainability and resource efficiency have always been at the center. Today, Leksandsbröd calculates its climate emissions with ZeroMission's sustainability platform Our Impacts.
Leksands Knäckebröd has been working on improvements for a long time, not least in energy efficiency.
"We have been working for a long time on efficiency improvements of various kinds - as early as the mid-50s, we began to recover heat from our ovens! In 2011, the goal was set to become fossil-free in the bakery itself, which we achieved in 2013. In 2019, we went on to calculate the climate impact of the entire bakery, which affected the entire organization and had a very good impact. The ambition has always been to calculate the entire value chain, which is of course a challenge. At the same time, we have seen a great deal of positive engagement among our 15-20 suppliers who notice that we, as the client, make demands and question various things."
Annika Sund is the company's marketing manager and since 2006, together with her brother Peter Joon, she is the sixth generation to run the company based on the same basic recipe as when their relative Jakobs Karin baked in the early 1800s. The recipe is basically simple, both in terms of the crispbread itself and the philosophy of how it works - locally sourced ingredients, a sense of tradition, knowledgeable people and care for resources. And, of course, a pinch of Dalmatian stubbornness!
For its climate calculations, Leksands Knäckebröd works in our sustainability platform Our Impacts. The platform provides great opportunities to get an overview of its emissions in all scopes. Identifying hotspots where emissions are greatest is of course most important initially in order to set reduction targets and reduce emissions over time. Climate work is undeniably a process that involves all parts of the company. It creates challenges but also provides many rewards when solutions are found to implement reductions that eventually show up in the climate accounts.
"Collecting data from suppliers has been both easy and difficult - everyone is in slightly different phases of their own climate work. Sometimes we have to sit and guide, but on the whole it goes well. We have a good idea of how to obtain our own data as we have been ISO 14000 certified since 1997 - having done environmental reporting before is a great help."
