Menigo Foodservice puts a price on its invisible waste through carbon offsetting

June 23, 2021

Menigo Foodservice has a partnership with ZeroMission to offset all emissions generated by its operations.

Christoffer Carlsmose, Corporate Sustainability Manager answers three quick questions:

What does Menigo's climate initiative mean in practice?

Reducing Menigo's carbon footprint and becoming climate neutral by 2030 is the issue we see that we need to work on most in our sustainability work. Therefore, it was natural for us to price the management of our invisible waste and start carbon offsetting to take responsibility for the emissions we have today.

It also means that we are the first restaurant wholesaler to take a holistic approach to climate compensation, where we not only focus on transportation, but also on business travel, refrigerants and waste.

We have a lot of work ahead of us to reduce our footprint. We are aware of that, but we are also very excited to take on that challenge. We also believe that this builds pride among our employees, customers and partners that we are taking responsibility and choosing to act now.

Why did you choose to work with ZeroMission?

ZeroMission has shown great professionalism, service and knowledge in the area, carbon offsetting is something new for us as a company and has therefore needed help in choosing the right project to invest in.

But we have also been keen to find projects that are close to our business and the impact we have in general, here ZeroMission has been phenomenal at answering all the questions we had.

Why carbon offsetting and why these three projects?

We wanted projects that are close to our business, and here ZeroMission had the best portfolio. The logic and connection is important to build engagement both internally and externally.

The three projects can be directly linked to large parts of our sustainability work on other issues, so we feel we have found the right fit. We see that these three projects not only counteract the clearing of rainforest for palm oil production, but also preserve biodiversity. The projects improve conditions for the local population and, above all, the carbon offsets help reduce carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.

Menigo Foodservice is carbon offsetting in the following three projects:

  • Vanga Blue Forest, a project in eastern Kenya protecting valuable mangrove forests from deforestation.
  • Chulika stoves , a project in Raichur, India, where efficient stoves reduce the need for wood for cooking while improving indoor air quality.
  • Bujang Raba, a forest conservation project in Sumatra, Indonesia.

The projects are certified under Plan Vivo and Fairtrade Climate Standard.
