In this project, the carbon benefit is achieved by replacing fossil fuels with biogas. The biogas is produced from pig and livestock manure mixed with compost and water.
In Indonesia, there is widespread use of firewood and expensive fossil fuels for cooking and heating water. The purpose of the project is to install small-scale biogas plants for households with livestock as a sustainable energy source for cooking and lighting. The project is located on the island of Sulawesi, where mainly pig manure is used to produce biogas. The digestate from production is used as a valuable organic fertilizer that can be used to improve yields.
In addition to emissions that are avoided from the burning of wood and fossil fuels, the project contributes to emission reductions through the utilization of pig manure that otherwise emits methane during fermentation. The digestate from biogas production also replaces chemical fertilizers and their emissions from production and transport. Since the start of the project, the project has installed 18,400 biogas plants and avoided the combustion of approximately 63,000 tonnes of wood.
