Sales of carbon offsets on the rise

November 14, 2023

The sale of carbon credits on the voluntary carbon offset market continues to increase for Swedish companies, according to a survey conducted by Sustainergies on behalf of us at ZeroMission together with other players in our industry.

Methodology

Data on carbon offset sales in tons per year were collected for this study through telephone interviews and additional email contact. Data collected was summarized by year, and these totals were used for calculations of change per year and growth rates. The report shows changes in total sales in Sweden by year and over the years from 2015 onwards.

Outcome

The study shows that the trend of a growing market for carbon offset sales continues. In this year's compilation, total sales have increased significantly, even compared to the previous year. Particularly evident is the increase in the average size of sales per corporate customer and the largest sales to a single corporate customer.

The chart below shows the results using an index (100) based on 2015 sales.

As the graph shows, the survey clearly indicates an increase in carbon offset sales (measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) from 2015 to 2022. The sales figures for corporate customers indicate that carbon offsetting continues to be an important element in meeting companies' climate pledges and increasing climate commitments. The study does not include offsets purchased by private individuals.
