Climate impact of film and series production in Sweden

July 6, 2020

During the spring, ZeroMission , together with Film I VÀst, conducted the first study of its kind in Sweden with the work of minimizing and reporting the climate impact of the series production BÀckström.

Climate and the environment have not been a priority or highlighted issue in the Swedish film industry. This was highlighted last year when 250 film workers signed a petition calling for more consideration to be given to climate and the environment in how films are produced in Sweden. In the US, major film studios routinely calculate their climate impact, but in Sweden there are still no established routines and methods for calculating climate impact and producing sustainably.

"The pilot project we initiated during the production of BÀckströms can provide guidance to the Swedish film and TV industry"

says Georgie Mathew, BÀckström Film Producer, in a press release.

One conclusion from the study is the importance of producing locally as the climate impact of air travel from staff travel and transportation was dominant for the total outcome. This is despite the fact that the recording that took place abroad was marginal compared to that in Sweden.

We at ZeroMission would like to thank Ronny Fritsche, Environmental Strategist at Film I VĂ€st, who, in addition to having exemplarily driven this work, also authored the insightful associated report A Study in Green, which can be read here.
