Länsförsäkringar Norrbotten - First Swedish company to support reforestation in East Timor

May 27, 2021

For six years, Länsförsäkringar Norrbotten has calculated its climate impact in the ZeroMission platform, and for a couple of years now all emissions have been climate compensated. This year, Länsförsäkringar Norrbotten has chosen to support the new project Halo Verde, the first project of its kind in East Timor to be certified.

ZeroMission is the only player currently offering credits from the project and Länsförsäkringar Norrbotten is the first company in Sweden to carbon offset here.

"Through our annual carbon audit, we know what emissions our activities generate, and some we simply cannot avoid. Even though we are working to reduce our climate impact, we need to take responsibility for emissions that occur. Working on emission reductions does not exclude offsetting, but we need to do both, as time is short and people are already affected by climate change today. We see investing in high-quality projects, like Halo Verde, as an important piece of the puzzle in being serious and taking the climate crisis seriously," says Thomas Folkesson, Head of Communications at Länsförsäkringar Norrbotten.

Working on emission reductions does not exclude offsetting, but we need to do both, as time is short and people are already affected by climate change today.

The agroforestry model, where crops and local tree species are planted together, promotes carbon sequestration while providing more abundant harvests. The goal is to reforest 322 hectares of land by 2029. Forests provide many more services than just carbon sequestration. Replanting deforested land reduces the risk of soil erosion and biodiversity loss on the island. And this is where alternative sources of income are important to enable the work. At the same time, the project is working on implementing alternative sources of income, with an extra focus on female participants.

About Plan Vivo

In the voluntary carbon offset market, there are several different standards, each with a different focus. Plan Vivo is the only standard that puts smallholders and people at the center. Plan Vivo allows only native trees and crops. In addition, at least 60% of the income from the sale of carbon offset credits must go directly to smallholders as payments for ecosystem services.
