Our Impacts - powerful platform for climate calculations

September 17, 2021

In early September, ZeroMission conducted a well-attended seminar where we presented Our Impacts, our platform for climate calculations. Anna Wenell and Filip Dessle from ZeroMission held the presentations and we were also visited by Leksands Knäckebröd's marketing manager Annika Sund and Areim's Anna Broman. The moderator was Johanna Grant.

Our Impacts is one of the most user-friendly climate calculation software on the market. It is based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and measures emissions in scopes 1, 2 and 3. It is also a very powerful platform that, with over 50,000 geographically controlled emission factors, allows the user to focus entirely on the data collection itself.

Annika Sundin, Leksands Knäckebröd:

The Our Impacts platform provides a lot of help when it comes to entering data, as there are many calculations in the background of the system. For example, for a trip, you only need to enter the names of cities and the distance is already entered, which makes it much easier.

Since the IPCC report was released, there has been an even greater focus on corporate sustainability ambitions. Annika Sundin explains how she connects the dots at Leksands Knäckebröd:

Having all the calculations behind us creates even more engagement among employees, everyone has been made aware of this and realizes that we are part of the problem. Employees are usually happy that the management has solutions to the problems - for example, that cars are replaced to be driven fossil-free.

Leksands Knäckebröd has been trying to make improvements for a long time, not least in energy efficiency.

We have been working for a long time on efficiency improvements of various kinds - as early as the mid-50s, we began to recover heat from our ovens! In 2011, the goal was set to become fossil-free in the bakery itself and we became that in 2013. In 2019, we went on to calculate the climate of the entire bakery, which affected the entire organization and had a very good impact. The ambition has always been to calculate the entire chain, which is of course a challenge. At the same time, we have seen a great deal of positive engagement among our 15-20 suppliers who notice that we, as customers, make demands and question various things.

Collecting data from suppliers has been both easy and difficult - everyone is at slightly different stages of their own climate work. Sometimes we have to sit and guide, but on the whole it goes well. We have a good idea of how to get our own data as we have been ISO 14000 certified since 1997 - having done environmental reporting before is a great help.

Areim, a real estate company with the whole of the Nordic region as its working area, has slightly different challenges when it comes to its climate work.

Anna Broman:

We know that the construction and real estate sector accounts for a large share of climate emissions. Key issues for us are energy and the building materials we use. We have control over what we measure, so we know we can influence it. Our overall strategy is to transform underperforming buildings into better ones.

When it comes to calculating scope 3, we are just at the beginning of that work, but last year a project was started to calculate tenant adaptations, which is the part of scope 3 where we have the greatest impact. But overall, it is energy use and scope 2 where our climate impact is greatest. For us, it was a bit of a surprise from the start, but it is related to the fact that we have such a large volume of properties and in relation to that, remodeling is a fairly small part of our total climate impact. However, in a year with a large amount of new construction, it becomes a major burden in scope 3.

Anna Broman

We benchmark between our different properties - an easy way to compare similar properties and to find deviations that can be corrected. In future work, the ambition is to further digitize data flows to facilitate all data collection. Through Our Impacts , we easily identify what we need to prioritize in our climate work and use the report to set new goals and make activity plans for the coming year.

When it comes to lessons and approaches that Annika and Anna are happy to send to those who are about to start working with climate calculations in Our Impacts , they agree - Start now! Start now but limit the work and take one step at a time to then scale up. Then work with continuous improvements in the organization. And not to forget - don't forget to celebrate when you have reached some milestones along the way. Who doesn't like cake every now and then!
