Clean drinking water for schools and households in Uganda - Gold Standard

Every year, around 2.2 million people die due to lack of clean drinking water or inadequate sanitation. Those most at risk are children. As a way to purify water, about 40% of the population in Uganda boil their water for purification, which in turn requires a lot of firewood and degradation of local forests. In addition, the smoke produced by indoor fires is harmful to health.

The main objective of this project is to distribute water purification systems to low-income households and schools in Uganda, thereby tackling the aforementioned problems. The climate benefit is achieved by reducing the consumption of wood and coal for boiling water. The project has been active since 2013.

Water treatment in schools consists of a filter and a water tank with a capacity of 450 to 1 000 liters. The filter purifies the water in three stages: the first stage filters out the coarsest impurities in the water. In the second stage, an activated carbon filter is used to absorb the smallest particles and volatile organic contaminants, ensuring that the water does not smell or taste strange. The final step uses a UV filter that kills microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses and pathogens. Thanks to the project, students' attendance at school increases, as they are less likely to get sick from the water they drink.

In addition to providing clean water to children at school, the project also helps reduce the need to bring water from home. When the water treatment system is installed, it replaces the previous methods of purifying water, methods that have led to deforestation and the use of coal. This saves over half a million tons of carbon dioxide every year.
