Using the framework from the Science Based Targets Network, you can set scientific goals for reducing your impact on nature. ZeroMission’s climate strategists will guide you along the way.
There is now a scientific framework for measuring whether your company is operating within nature’s limits. With “ Science Based Targets s for Nature,” you can set concrete, science-based targets for your impact on biodiversity, land, freshwater, and the ocean—just as the “ Science Based Targets ” initiative (SBTi) has already done for climate targets.
ZeroMissions’ certified climate strategists will guide you through the entire process toward a validated target.
SBTN’s methodology is based on five steps, and ZeroMission supports you through each one.
1. Assess: Map out and assess where in the value chain your operations have the greatest impact on nature, using a materiality analysis.
2. Prioritize: Identify the geographic locations and environmental issues where your efforts will make the biggest difference.
3. Set targets: Set measurable, time-bound, science-based targets linked to the prioritized areas.
4. Act: Implement concrete measures to reduce negative impacts and enhance positive effects.
5. Track: continuously monitor, measure, and report on progress.
The first three steps are currently open for external validation. Guidance for steps four and five (Act and Track) is still being developed and is expected to be finalized as SBTN releases new technical guidance.
ZeroMission We are part of the Science Based Targets Network’s program for corporate partnerships and recommendations, and we are a certified SBT for Nature trainer. This means we are a recommended partner for companies that want to set nature-based targets and need expert support throughout the entire process, from impact assessment to final target validation.
In addition to advising on the goal-setting process itself, we offer training and workshops on SBTN for executive teams and sustainability functions, as well as ongoing updates on the framework’s development as new modules and guidance documents are published.
The more relevant comparison here is between the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) and the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). These are two related but separate organizations that promote science-based target-setting.
SBTN comprises four “hubs” with separate areas of focus: biodiversity, land, freshwater, and oceans. Each of these hubs is responsible for developing methods for setting targets, and together they form the “ Science Based Targets ” for Nature.
The fifth pillar, the Climate Hub, falls instead under the SBTi’s purview and develops resources that enable companies to set science-based climate targets.
The SBT for Nature framework focuses on environmental impact and guides companies and government agencies in setting organization-specific targets to reduce their impact on land, oceans, freshwater, and biodiversity. Science Based Targets for Climate focuses solely on climate change, but since climate change affects all ecosystem services, the two are still related. SBT for Nature may also require companies to set mandatory climate targets if the organization has significant greenhouse gas emissions.
The first step in developing science-based targets for environmental impact is to conduct an organization-specific materiality analysis. Actions are always site-specific, and organizations with validated targets need to track indicators linked to those targets.
Yes! SBTN’s validation process is open to companies worldwide, regardless of size, complexity, or industry, with certain limited exceptions for consulting firms, oil and gas companies, and financial institutions.
In 2025, more than 150 companies developed science-based nature goals, including companies from countries such as China, India, the United States, and Sri Lanka.
