Guarantees of origin - how your business can drive the energy transition

September 23, 2025

Electricity use is often one of the biggest sources of a company's climate impact. By choosing origin-labeled electricity, or Guarantees of Origin, you can ensure that your electricity use is linked to renewable energy sources - while contributing to the global energy transition.

What are guarantees of origin?

All electricity produced, regardless of its source, is registered through an origin marking system. In Sweden, the Swedish Energy Agency is responsible for the system. For each megawatt hour (1 MWh = 1 000 kWh) produced, the electricity producer receives a certificate, known as a guarantee of origin. The certificate indicates the type of energy source the electricity comes from - for example wind, hydro or solar power.

Once an end-user buys guarantees of origin corresponding to its consumption and these are canceled in the national registry, no one else can use the same certificate. In this way, the company can demonstrate that the electricity used in its operations is renewable, even if the actual electricity coming out of the outlet is always a mix from many different producers.

Buying origin-labeled electricity is good because it ensures that your electricity use is linked to renewable generation while driving the development of a sustainable electricity system.

Why is origin-labelled electricity important?

By purchasing Guarantees of Origin, companies take an active step to reduce their carbon footprint. The certificates serve as a tool to reach climate targets, increase the credibility of sustainability work and demonstrate responsibility to customers, investors and other stakeholders. "Choosing origin-labeled electricity is a concrete and important way for companies to influence their climate impact and show the way in the energy transition, this is especially important for companies with operations outside the Nordic region where the electricity mix often consists of more fossil electricity production," says Henrik Juhlin, CEO of ZeroMission.

In addition, the purchase of guarantees of origin helps to strengthen the economics of existing and new renewable electricity generation. For producers, the revenue from the certificates is an important part of the investment calculation, and the demand for origin-labeled electricity signals to the market and politicians that there is a strong will to accelerate the transition to a sustainable electricity system.

"Guarantees of origin are more than just a piece of paper - they are a tool that drives investment in new, sustainable electricity generation", Henrik Juhlin CEO of ZeroMission.

Globally accessible - locally impactful

ZeroMission offers guarantees of origin for renewable electricity in Europe, North America, South America and Asia, always from wind, hydro and solar power. This means you can ensure that your company's electricity use is renewable, no matter where in the world you operate.

A step towards net zero

Reducing the climate impact of energy use is a key part of the journey towards net-zero emissions. Guarantees of origin are not the only answer to the climate challenge, but they are a simple and powerful tool for companies that want to take responsibility here and now - while contributing to the long-term development of a more sustainable electricity system.
