The REDD project, situated in Tanzania’s Yaeda Valley is one of our most unique Plan Vivo projects. It focuses on forest conservation in collaboration with the Hadza tribe, a group of hunter gatherers, and the Datoga tribe, a pastoralist community. The the Hadza tribe has lived in this area harmoniously with nature for 40,000 years.
Over the past 50 years, the Hadza- and Datoga people have lost more than 90% of their land to other communities seeking land for grazing and cultivation. This is addressed in our project through performance-based payments that help promote the these tribes way of life and keep forests intact.
Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) is a UN initiative through the UNFCCC aimed at conserving forests and stopping deforestation globally. In the Yaeda Valley, we work with Carbon Tanzania and the Hadza- and the Datoga people to create a management system to preserve their forest and defend their way of life.
The project is Plan Vivo certified, and finances the Hadza and the Datoga communities maintenance, patrol and sustinable use of their forest. In total, the project has offset 48,000 tonnes of CO2e, and protected over 30,000 hectares of forest.
