Climate finance as a start for more initiatives

The journey for Arvid Nordquist Climate Finance began in 2011 when the company started buying carbon credits corresponding to the climate impact of all coffee from a life cycle perspective, throughout the supply chain. The initiative became a catalyst for broader and dedicated sustainability work that has been a rewarding boost for the company - not least for the business.

Arvid Nordquist's marketing manager Erica Bertilsson says that the main reason for the investment was to achieve increased differentiation in the market. Then climate financing became a catalyst for their own sustainability work. When the investment was well received, it was also easier to make decisions about further sustainability investments.

- Arvid Nordquist has been around for over 130 years. When we do something, we take a long-term view. Today, climate finance is part of the values that our brand delivers, an asset for us and our customers," says Erica Bertilsson, Sustainability & Communications Director at Arvid Nordquist.

Arvid finances climate projects in, among other places, a project in Nicaragua.

Erica Bertilsson notes that many tree planting projects are carried out in coffee-growing countries that Arvid Nordquist already has a relationship with and regularly visits. She emphasizes that climate financing and reducing one's carbon footprint is essential if you work with agricultural products.

- We are part of those who put pressure on ecosystems while depending on them. There are 25 million coffee farmers affected by climate change worldwide. For us, it is therefore obvious to focus on Plan Vivo's climate projects that provide both environmental benefits and improved living conditions. It was not a difficult decision, says Erica Bertilsson.

She believes that an important part of Arvid Nordquist s success in linking the sustainability strategy to the business is that they have made it part of their brand communication and gathered the entire staff so that they became ambassadors for the climate projects.

– Today, climate financing is part of the values that our brand delivers.

More on climate finance

ZeroMission offers verified and certified carbon credits for companies that want to help finance projects that reduce or remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.

We help you find projects that benefit the climate, the environment and the people who live there. We offer around 20 certified projects. The projects prevent, reduce or sequester carbon dioxide, but we do not select projects solely on the basis of their climate benefits. They must also improve the social, health and economic conditions of the local population they affect.

Three types of climate projects - sequester, prevent, reduce

These projects contribute to the achievement of the SDGs in several ways. Our climate projects are divided into three categories, the same as used in the ISO 14021 standard.

How we choose climate projects

  1. Local anchoring - projects should be well anchored in the long term among local stakeholders and project participants.
  2. Additionality - they should have a high degree of additionality, which ensures that the project activities add something that would not have happened otherwise.
  3. Verification - emission reductions should be quantifiable through accepted measurement methods, while having a verified and long-term climate benefit.
  4. Sustainable development - projects should clearly contribute to social sustainability, for example by creating new jobs and disseminating new knowledge.
