Climate calculations and transition with TFS HealthScience

TFS HealthScience is a full service, global Contract Research Organization (CRO) that partners with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies to advance innovative treatments and improve patient outcomes. With operations across 50 countries, TFS and its strategic partners provide tailored strategic resourcing sourcing and clinical development services in specialized therapeutic areas.

Since 2023, ZeroMission has had the great pleasure of collaborating with TFS HealthScience as a provider of high-quality services in climate calculations and consulting support for setting science-based climate targets (Science Based Targets). This work has supported TFS in its climate transition and culminated in September 2025 with the approval of short- and long-term targets by SBTi – an important milestone in TFS's broader commitment to climate action and responsible clinical research.

TFS use ZeroMission's sustainability platform Our Impacts–a powerful tool built on a database of over more than 100,000 emission factors—to conduct comprehensive carbon calculations covering all three scopes of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. The analysis spans everything from purchased goods and services to electricity use, business travel, and employee commuting.

We took the opportunity to ask Nicole Bezuidenhout, Sustainability and Communications Manager at TFS, a few questions!

“As a global CRO, TFS has made significant strides in strengthening our sustainability data, increase transparency, and integrating climate considerations into strategic decision-making across the business,” says Nicole Bezuidenhout, Sustainability and Communications Manager.

TFS has been using our sustainability platform for several years to calculate your emissions. What has been the biggest lesson learned so far?

One of our biggest learnings has been to gain a clearer, more comprehensive understanding of our true emissions footprint, both in defining the right scope and in improving the accuracy of underlying data. We quickly realized that this is rather a common challenge for large, global organizations. As a result, we have invested significant effort in improving our internal processes to streamline reporting into Our Impacts, which has been easy to use and reliable in terms of the results we've obtained.

Since our first carbon accounting cycle, we have significantly expanded the scope of what we measure and shifted increasingly from spend-based estimates to actual activity data where possible. This transition was easy to implement in the platform and has greatly improved both data quality and our confidence in the results. Regular check-ins and guidance from the ZeroMission team have been essential during this work. Together, we have navigated gaps, identified where supplier information can meaningfully enhance accuracy, and continuously refined our approach as better data becomes available–an ongoing journey.

In 2023, TFS committed to setting near-term emission reduction targets in line with climate science by the end of 2025. In what ways has the platform supported your internal goal-setting and transition planning?

The platform has been key in providing consistency and methodological rigor in our emissions calculations so we could develop a robust and credible baseline for our science-based targets. However, what made the biggest difference was the close collaboration with the ZeroMission team.

With the help of Rounak, Ellinor Jimmy, we have been able to interpret our data in light of the science-based targets and successfully complete the application and validation process with SBTi. We have been able to design meaningful and realistic reduction targets and transition plans, including how to track, report on, and integrate their implications across the different scopes and categories. The insights we have gained have been incredibly important in guiding our internal decision-making and transition planning.

“Proper carbon accounting and a reliable calculation are the foundation that makes our climate goals credible and our progress measurable—helping us move faster and more confidently toward our climate goals.”

– Nicole Bezuidenhout, Sustainability and Communications Manager.

ZeroMission's customer service and support have been excellent—consistently reliable and always responsive, helpful, and collaborative, which has made a real difference in advancing our sustainability journey. Their expertise has been instrumental in helping us build a strong foundation for our sustainability work, especially in carbon accounting, reporting, and setting meaningful targets. This level of support has accelerated our internal climate maturity and enabled us to take more confident, science-informed action.

What sets ZeroMission apart is their deep knowledge, actionable guidance, and genuine partnership approach.
