As a consulting firm with operations in several countries, Prevas needed a carbon footprint calculation that would be valid for both internal decision-making and external reporting in accordance with ESRS. Together with ZeroMission , Prevas has mapped its Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions in accordance with the GHG Protocol, a dataset that now serves as the basis for the company’s sustainability reporting.
Prevas is a development company that specializes in product development, manufacturing, and digitalization. With operations in four countries, numerous customers, and diverse work practices, the company needed a climate assessment that was consistent across national borders and, at the same time, detailed enough to meet the requirements of the ESRS.
The sources of emissions were spread across offices, IT equipment, business travel, employee commutes, and a small number of company-owned cars. This data is often stored in different systems and formats in different countries.
“The hardest part is probably compiling data from an organization that is both large and decentralized. It’s not just about collecting data, but also about understanding what data we need, how it should be collected, and how we can ensure that it’s comparable over time,” says Helena Lundin.
Another challenge is setting priorities. There are many areas where more could be done, but the focus needs to be on where the impact will be greatest.
– That’s why it’s valuable to have a structured method for calculating our carbon footprint that remains consistent over time. It helps us move from mere ambition to a more fact-based approach.
“You need to understand the current situation before you can set the right priorities for the future.” — Helena Lundin, Head of Communication & Sustainability, Prevas
With ZeroMissions' sustainability platform Our Impacts , Prevas was able to consolidate all data in one place, and multiple data providers in different countries could report directly to the platform. This simplified data collection and ensured consistency in the data.
Our Impacts is based on a database of up-to-date, location-specific emission factors that are automatically adjusted according to location and time. For a company with operations in four countries, this means, for example, electricity consumption at offices in Norway and Finland is calculated based on the conditions in each respective country.
Prevas calculates its greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with the GHG Protocol, which divides emissions into three categories:
The results are used as a basis for Prevas’s ESRS reporting and provide the company with a comprehensive, comparable overview of emissions across all four countries. This is essential for setting relevant reduction targets going forward.
“I’m most pleased that we’ve taken the step to start measuring our carbon footprint in a more structured way. It has also made it clearer just how much work goes into calculating a carbon footprint: collecting the right data, understanding what it tells us, and, above all, being able to use it to make better decisions,” says Helena Lundin.
She sees the calculation as the beginning of an ongoing effort.
– Once we have better data, we can also start asking better questions and prioritizing the right initiatives.
Climate calculations are a field with many definitions, methods, and scope limitations. For Prevas, it has been valuable to have access to specialized expertise when questions have arisen, particularly in connection with the climate footprint audit.
– ZeroMission has helped us structure our work and make it more concrete. They’ve been quick and easy to work with and have been able to help us resolve issues along the way. This collaboration has made it easier for us to move forward while also building up our own internal expertise.
What Helena Lundin appreciates most is the combination of expertise and presence.
– They help us understand complex issues without making them more complicated than they need to be. This collaboration isn’t just about coming up with a number, but about understanding what the numbers mean and how we can use them moving forward. The goal isn’t to make a climate assessment once a year, but to create a framework that allows us to track progress and continue improving our sustainability efforts. We need a partner for this, and I’ve found one at ZeroMission.
