Taking Root - how to create a high-quality carbon offset project

November 7, 2022

Taking Root is a developer of carbon offset projects that combine high climate benefits with many other benefits. Will Sheldon from Taking Root visited us at our breakfast seminar in September and talked about this.

Taking Root Nicaragua – CommuniTree

Taking Root currently has one project - CommuniTree in Nicaragua. Will describes how they developed this from scratch and how there are some key factors that determine whether projects are successful or not. In most cases, it's about engaging local people in a way that makes it worthwhile to keep the trees growing. It simply has to be profitable for the smallholder.

Early payments from the sale of carbon offset credits, ongoing income from co-planted crops such as coffee and the sale of biochar produced from forest residues during thinning create incentives to let the trees grow and absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Note: Since 2024, ZeroMission—like many others in our industry—has started using the term carbon offsetting of “climate compensation.” We believe this term better describes what it’s all about. Read more here.
